FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit organization that empowers young people to become innovators and leaders through hands-on STEM learning experiences. Founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST engages students from PreK through 12th grade in robotics-based programs designed to build critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills. These programs foster innovation, self-confidence, and life skills while promoting core values like Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® — encouraging students to work hard, compete respectfully, and support one another.
FIRST offers four age-appropriate programs:
-
FIRST® LEGO® League – For children ages 4–16 (varies by country), this program introduces STEM through fun, hands-on learning using LEGO® technology and real-world challenges.
-
FIRST® Tech Challenge – Designed for students in grades 7–12, this program has teams design, build, and program robots to complete themed missions.
-
FIRST® Robotics Competition – For high school students, this program combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science and technology as teams compete with large-scale, custom-built robots.
-
FIRST® LEGO® League Discover – A playful early learning program for PreK–grade 1 focused on exploration and storytelling through STEM.
These programs are supported by a global community of educators, mentors, volunteers, and sponsors who work together to provide an inclusive, welcoming experience for all students. Participants often gain access to college scholarships, internships, and career paths in STEM-related fields.
Research shows that FIRST has a long-term, positive impact on students. Alumni are more likely to pursue STEM majors and careers, report higher self-confidence, and demonstrate perseverance when facing challenges.
Today, FIRST reaches hundreds of thousands of students annually across more than 100 countries, creating life-changing opportunities and preparing the next generation of leaders and changemakers.
